Gap fill generator: fill-in-the-blank exercises from your own text
Paste a text, a YouTube link or a photo of a page and ask for gap fills. Temaly takes the blanks from your source, you check and edit them, and students type the missing words from one link, or you print the sheet with an answer key.
How to make gap fills from your own text
Bring the text
Paste an article, a story or your notes, or add a YouTube link, photos of a page or a PDF. The blanks come from what your source says.
Ask for gap fills
Write it under “What should they practise?”, for example “Fill-in-the-blank sentences with the key dates”. The AI follows what you write, but a first set is written to mix kinds of exercise, so read what comes back.
Add more gap fills, or write your own
Open the set and press “Generate more”. Ask for “Four gap fills about the factories”, up to six at a time. Or press “Add one myself”, type the sentence with ___ for each blank and type the answer that fits.
Check, then share or print
Read the blanks and fix any weak one: sentence and answer can be changed by hand. Students open one link, type their name and type the missing words, with no account. Or print the sheet: the blanks become lines, and the answer key is on its own page.
Texts teachers turn into gap fills
Your own history notes
Paste notes on the Industrial Revolution and ask for gap fills on dates and names. A real result: “The spinning jenny, which let one worker spin several threads at once, was invented by James ___.” The key says Hargreaves.
A grammar page from the coursebook
Photograph the page on the present perfect. The sentences come from the page and the blanks drill the form of the verb.
A YouTube video for science class
Paste a video about the water cycle. The blanks are words said in the video, and each exercise can point back to the moment where the answer is said.
A news article at B1
Paste the article and ask for gap fills on the verbs. Temaly aims for blanks that can be worked out from the article, so students have to read it closely.
How a gap fill works
- One sentence with one or more blanks; each blank takes one answer, usually one word.
- Students type the missing answer themselves. There is no word bank to drag from.
- Marked automatically: capital letters, accents and punctuation do not count. A word the exact check rejects can still be accepted by an AI check if it means the same, and you can change any mark yourself.
- Printed, the blanks become lines to write on, with the answer key on its own page.
- Results show what each student typed and the wrong answer most of them gave.
What to know before you start
- Blanks come from your own text, video, photos or PDF. Students type the missing word and it is marked automatically; print with an answer key. There is no gap-fill-only switch: ask for gap fills in your request.
- Free to start, with no sign-up. There is a daily fair-use limit on AI drafting, shared by everyone on the same network.
- Students need only the link and their name: no account, no app. It works on any phone, tablet or computer with a browser.
- The interface is in English, Romanian, Russian, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Kazakh. Each set of exercises is written in the language you choose for it.

Questions teachers ask
Is the gap fill generator free?
Yes. You can start at once, without signing up.
Can I get only gap fills?
There is no gap-fill-only button, but you can ask for them in two places. Under “What should they practise?”, write for example “Fill-in-the-blank sentences with the key dates”: the AI follows what you write, though a first set is written to mix kinds, so read what comes back. Or open a set, press “Generate more” and ask for “Four gap fills about the factories”, up to six at a time. Any that repeat an exercise you already have are left out, so you may get fewer than you asked for. You can delete the other exercises.
Where do the blanks come from?
From the source you bring: your own text, a YouTube video, photos of a page or a PDF. Temaly writes sentences from what the source says and blanks out words that can be worked out from it. It only asks about what the source says, and you can edit every sentence and answer.
Can I choose the words that are blanked out?
Yes, by hand. Press “Add one myself”, choose “Gap fill”, type the sentence with ___ where each blank goes and type the answer for each blank. You can also change a sentence the AI wrote: move a ___ or change an answer.
Can a blank have more than one right answer?
The answer key holds one answer per blank, usually one word. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and an AI check can accept an answer with the same meaning when the exact check rejects it. You can also change the mark of any answer yourself on the results page.
Can I print the gap fills?
Yes. Print the set as a worksheet: the blanks become lines to write on, with name and date lines at the top and the answer key on its own page. You can also save it as a PDF.
Do students need an account?
No. They open the link, type their name and fill in the blanks.
Can I make gap fills from a YouTube video or a photo?
Yes. Paste the link of a YouTube video (no subtitles needed) or add photos of a page or a PDF, then ask for gap fills in the same way. Each exercise from a video can point back to the moment where the answer is said.
Is a gap fill the same as a cloze test?
Close. Teachers say gap fill, fill in the blanks or cloze for a text with words taken out that students put back. In Temaly it is the exercise kind “Gap fill”: a sentence with blanks, each blank one answer, usually one word.
